I know what you mean about the self contained island, New York is like that too. Anthony Bourdain just did a great show on the bouroughs of NY--he had NEVER explored them for food and was contrite. It was a good episode.
I never want to live in a place that is self contained and feels it has everything, it's just silly. Unless I'm in Bali...
