While small companies have their own issues, I find them easier to manage and less 'corporate'. The last five jobs I've had were with companies of less than 20 people. When one grew to 50 I left as they started changing policies as if they were IBM.
It sucks if you feel like a number rather than a person contributing to a team effort. Large companies have a lot of deadwood. I estimate 20-30% of the workforce gets by on doing little or nothing. About half get by doing just enough to look busy. 20-30% of the people are the core producers who actually get things done.
If you're part of the core you'll always be noticed and appreciated in a smaller work environment. In a large corporate setting the powers-that-be don't know who the workers are and who the posers are. Ass kissers are usually slackers. They get promoted. They get raises. The quietly productive employee gets little recognition.
There's nothing wrong with the 40 hour work routine if you're spending it with good people and you feel appreciated.
Go small. Leave the corporate jobs to the lemmings.
